UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the creation of the Transatlantic Taskforce for Markets of the Future, aimed at aligning digital asset regulation and deepening cross-border capital markets cooperation. The body, comprising officials from HM Treasury, the U.S. Treasury, and market regulators from both jurisdictions, has 180 days to deliver recommendations through the existing U.K.–U.S. Financial Regulatory Working Group.

The taskforce focuses on two core areas: developing shared supervisory approaches for stablecoins, tokenised securities, and wholesale digital market infrastructure, and reducing regulatory barriers to cross-border capital raising. Bank of America, Barclays, Circle, Citi, Coinbase, and Ripple all participated in shaping the initiative. Circle's vice president Dante Disparte described the taskforce as a pivotal step toward safer and more resilient markets, while Coinbase advocated for a U.S.–UK stablecoin corridor and the tokenisation of traditional assets. Mark Aruliah, head of EMEA policy and regulatory affairs at Elliptic, noted that the taskforce signals a strong intent to close the UK's competitive gap relative to the U.S. pro-innovation agenda.

The UK's draft crypto legislation brings crypto firms under the same regulatory framework as traditional financial institutions — including capital adequacy, conduct, and market abuse prevention requirements — with the full ruleset taking effect in 2026. Elliptic assessed that structured collaboration of this kind may establish a global benchmark if other jurisdictions, including the European Union and Asia-Pacific financial hubs, follow suit.
